The DEADLINE for submission of paper and panel proposals, and to participate as a discussant or chair, is September 25, 2027.
Theme: From Political Turmoil to Democratic Renewal
During the past decade, political turmoil has characterized the global political landscape. The proliferation of misinformation has contributed to increased political distrust and an electorate that is less accurately informed. Countries once considered unshakeable democracies now face citizens who question the value of democracy in a period of legislative gridlock tied to political polarization and distortion. Political leaders are increasingly taking advantage of this distrust, misinformation, and chaos to consolidate political power.
Political scientists play an important role in fostering positive change through their ability to shine a light on the crucial problems facing our society and providing evidence-based solutions. Moreover, through our role as educators we endeavor to provide the next generation with the tools and the passion they need to create a more inclusive, representative and responsive democracy. The theme of 2027 Western Political Science Association Meeting “From Political Turmoil to Democratic Renewal”highlights the important role that political science plays in the political landscape.
We invite a wide range of proposals across subfields which identify the causes and consequences of some of the most pressing issues facing our society including democratic backsliding, climate change, political polarization, institutional distrust, political misinformation, economic displacement, growing racial and gender inequality and political violence among other areas. We also encourage research proposals which chart a pathway to democratic renewal through providing solutions to these challenges.
To participate in the 2027 WPSA, please use the request to participate form to submit proposals for research papers, full panels, author-meets-critic, undergraduate posters or roundtable proposals. Please also indicate whether you are willing to serve as chair or discussant for your panel, or for another. Your proposal will be forwarded to the appropriate program section chair for review and placement. For special submissions including proposals for mini-conferences, virtual community meetings, or other events, please contact Program Chair Christopher Stout ([email protected]) or Executive Director Richard Clucas ([email protected]) for instructions.
